What is MPR

Midwest Public Risk is a public entity self-insurance pool providing workers' compensation, liability, property, health, dental and vision insurance to a membership of 99 Missouri and Kansas local governments and school districts. Members include cities, counties, special purpose local governments and school districts. In addition to a full line of insurance products designed to meet the special needs of local governments, Midwest Public Risk also offers a comprehensive program of loss control services to educate Members on loss control issues.

Midwest Public Risk originated as MARCIT on July 1, 1983 with 9 members who joined together in a pioneer workers' compensation program. One year later, MARCIT added employee benefits health and dental coverage. January 1985 saw the introduction of liability and property to the coverages.

The majority of MPR's membership is in Missouri and the five Kansas counties in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. However, effective July 1, 2009, under agreement with the Kansas Department of Insurance, our growth opportunities extend to the entire state of Kansas to offer health, dental and vision to local governments and school districts. The Kansas products will be offered under MPR of Kansas pool.

An eleven person Board of Directors, elected by the Members to serve 3-year overlapping terms, governs Midwest Public Risk. The Board appoints the President / CEO, who is responsible for implementation and administration of all Midwest Public Risk programs and services. Midwest Public Risk provides its service with a small staff of insurance professionals and a network of contracted service providers. This includes claims adjusters, insurance brokers and defense attorneys.
